Salvatore "Sal the iron worker" Montagna was the acting boss of the Bonanno Family from 2006 till 2009.
It is rather unclear where Salvatore Montagna was born. Some sources say he was born in Canada but grew up in Sicily and others claim he was born and raised in Castellammare Del Golfo. Montagna came to the United states as a teenager during the mid 1980's. Once in New York he fell under the wing of then Bonanno boss Joseph Massino. He married a woman in the early 1990's named Kellice Gucciardo and has 3 daughters. By marriage he related himself with the Gambino Family and Genovese Family.
Montagna started a metalworking company wich was called Matrix Steel Co. This earned him the nickname 'Sal the Iron Worker'. In 2002 he was arrested for loansharking and illegal gambling. In 2003 he pleaded guilty to criminal contempt charges for refusing to answer any questions in front of a Manhattan grand jury. When Vincent Basciano was arrested in 2006 Montagna was appointed as the new acting boss. However, since his indictment in 2003 he has been detained by immigration authorities who eventually had him deported to Canada in April 2009.
