Frank 'Cadillac Frank' Salemme was born in 1934 and grew up in Massachusetts where he became a made man within the Patriarca Family under Raymond Patriarca. In 1969 he fled his hometown after being charged with murder. He was captured in 1971 by FBI agent John Connelly and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. It is believed that Salemme was betrayed by Steven Flemmi, who was working with the FBI since 1965.
Salemme was released in 1989 and made a grip for power within the Patriarca Family. Gennaro Angiulo, who was boss of the family after the natural dead of Raymond Patriarca, was sent to prison in 1986. Salemmi forged strong ties with Whitey Bulger and especially Steven Flemmi. In june 1989 Salemme was ambushed by Patriarca member Sonny Mercurio (1936 - 2006) and was shot in his chest and leg, but survived the attack. Mercurio was a federal witness from 1987 untill 1989 and helped bringing down the Patriarca Family. In 1995 Salemme was arrested and was indicted with racketeering charges together with Bulger and Flemmi. He pleaded guilty to the charges and also admitted he participated in 8 gangland murders during the 1960's. Salemme was sentenced to 15 years, after serving 8 years he agreed to become a federal witness in 2003. Flemmi also became a federal witness and now lives as a free man in Massachusetts. A judge reducted Salemme's sentence because his cooperation helped bring down a former FBI agent named John J. Connolly Jr.
On July 15, 2008, Salemme was sentenced to another 5 years for lying and obstruction of justice. In 1999 Salemme denied he was involved in the disappearance and possible murder of nightclub owner Steven DiSaro in 1993. The murder was committed by Salemme's son, who died in 1995 of lymphoma, and Caddilac Frank helped disposing the body.
